Good morning guys. I just want to share with you our adorable baby hamsters. My family and I had started first taking care of 1 male and 1 female hamster because my 5-year-old son wants to have pets inside our apartment in Hong Kong. We cannot take care of either a dog or cat because it really cost a fortune to buy one from a pet store here in Hong Kong and we decided to buy hamsters.
After buying 1 pair of a hamster, we are aware that they will multiply fast and it is! Within 3 weeks, the female hamster got pregnant and gave birth to 7 adorable baby hamsters. Check out the photo below.
They are so pink in color and very active. They move a lot and always want to feed milk from the mother hamster. We are all happy to see the newborn baby hamsters but apparently, we had discovered something informative and interesting. After 4 days, the mother hamster ate the 3 baby hamsters even the food supply is abundant every single day and water supply as well. Why the mother hamster ate her 3 babies? This is the big question I had in mind and I took some research on Google and found out these reasons below:
- The mother hamster needs more protein to feed milk to her babies. She will sacrifice even her babies for the sake of the others to live and survive.
- The mother hamster knows that the cage space is not big enough for her and the babies to fit in.
- The mother hamster thought that her baby hamsters are food. If you touch the baby hamsters, the food scent from your hands would go to the baby hamsters which is not good.
Anyway, I fully understand the mother hamster and for me, she is a super mother hamster! She is willing to sacrifice everything just for the sake of her babies for them to have a sufficient amount of milk every day. After 2 weeks of feeding milk, they look bigger and small hairs are growing.
